Survey: Help Shape Conversations About Substance Use in Young People

NHS Lanarkshire’s Health Improvement - Alcohol, Cannabis and Vaping team are undertaking a survey consultation project on substance use among young people. This work has been informed by insights gathered through engagement with young people across Lanarkshire.

They have developed tow surveys for completion:

  • One for young people (aged 13–25)
  • One for parents/carers

This project aims to engage both young people and parents/carers from a wide range of backgrounds. Substance use among young people remains a significant public health concern at a national level. Evidence suggests that one of the most effective harm reduction approaches is fostering open, informed communication between parents and young people about substances and expectations around their use.

It’s to understand:

  • What young people feel they need to know
  • What young people would like their parents/carers to understand about current drug and alcohol trends
  • Parents’ knowledge, perceptions, and concerns

The goal is to develop an accessible resource that reflects the information and support identified as most important by participants. This resource will help support more open, informed conversations within families and communities about substance use and harm reduction.
